Going to university to get a good job, applying twice to the same university, and keeping away from 'small' people.
😊 Welcome
This week we ask whether going to university will get you a good job. And if that’s not guaranteed, what exactly will university give you?
We look at whether you are really more likely to get a place by applying twice to your favourite university.
And we look at the importance of surrounding yourself with the right kind of people.
✍️ “Go to university!” they said. “It’ll get you a good job!”
Perhaps university will get you a good job, and perhaps it won’t, but one thing is for sure: If you think that university study alone will land you your dream job, you are going to be very disappointed in a few years time.
I have appointed more than a hundred people in my career, and not one of them got their job on the basis of their university study alone. They got their role because of the knowledge and experience they had, the skills they could demonstrate, the motivation they showed, and their aptitude to learn.
So, what exactly is the link between university and careers?
💡 Did You Know?
You can apply for more than one course at the same university, but that doesn't mean you should.
Lots of people think that if you apply twice, or three times, to the same university it means that you are more likely to get a place there.
But the reality is…
If the courses are very similar, if admissions are done by the same department, and if the entry grades are the same, there is usually no benefit in applying twice; you are no more likely to get an offer of a place.
And if the courses are very different, then you will probably run into problems with your Personal Statement not being a good match for both.
So…
Instead, it’s normally wise just to choose one course at your favourite university, and use your other choices to apply elsewhere.
📢 Quote of the week
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”
Mark Twain

Seriously.
Think carefully about who you surround yourself with.
Are they people who try to make you feel great, or are they people who try to make you feel small?
